A number of Algarve villas are well placed to take advantage of these courses; those in the towns of Gale and Sao Rafael have four courses just a short drive away. The Salgados course is the newest addition in the area. If you stay in one of the Algarve’s luxury villas near the town of Vale do Lobo, you will have too many golf clubs to choose from, including Quinta do Lago South Course, which has been the setting for the Portuguese Open nine times.

Celebrities in the Algarve

When you venture out from your Algarve holiday villas for 18 holes, you may even bump into a celebrity or sports star during your round. The Algarve is a popular destination for the rich and famous to practise their swing in the sunshine. The former England manager, Bobby Robson, hosts his eponymous Classic tournament here in July. This year, the Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp played a few holes with Luis Figo, and allegedly opened up negotiations to tempt the Portuguese legend out of retirement. So it may turn out that Harry Redknapp returned to his Algarve villa with a new player for Tottenham in his pocket.

And it’s not just sports stars that are drawn to the south coast’s sunshine.
